Martha and her cousin Doris had been brought up together after Doris' parents died when she was three. Doris was back from New York where she worked as a model in cosmetic ads. She gives Martha advice on falling for a rich man like the author she just met instead of the illustrator she had been seeing previously. Martha thinks she's found real love with the author until she goes for a walk and sees him kissing Doris.
