Sonia is sent to spy on a member of the USA ambassador's staff but ends up falling in love with him and defecting to the USA. Sonia’s Russian parents were killed by Nazis during World War II and she becomes a dedicated Communist Party member and bureaucrat. She meets American diplomat Bob and her superiors urge her to cultivate a friendship. Sonia falls in love with Bob but is informed that he’s a married man, so she breaks up with him, only to later learn he’s a widower. At a conference in Geneva, Sonia reconciles with Bob and defects to the USA.
