An English girl fleeing through a squalid French seaport is desperate to escape thugs who she fears will kill her. Seeing a ship set to sail, she pleads with the English captain to take her with him. Knowing the rough nature of his crew, he refuses. She later accepts the offer of a mate to smuggle her aboard the boat, not realizing his true plans for her and the captain.
