Lucy sees an advertisement for a "Redbanks" cottage and thinks it might be a good place for her and her mother to stay. When she drives out to see it, she thinks it is ideal and signs the contract to buy it. But the place she had seen was "Redlands", not "Redbanks", and "Redlands" had just been bought by an artist. Discovering "Redbanks" is in bad shape, she spends her spare time fixing up her cottage while thinking of the artist. She later gets help from a man who says he is a house renovator, but he is actually an escaped convict looking for money hidden on her property.
