Maria returns to the boarding school where the love of her life had started and ended. Outside the school walls she met an aspiring aero design engineer flying a model plane. She wasn't supposed to talk to the local boys, but they kept seeing each other anyway. Rob got an apprenticeship in Australia and offered to take her there to get married. He said he would know she had changed her mind if she hadn't come to the station by nine. Maria planned to leave with him, but a teacher locked her in her room. Before she could write to him, the papers report that he was killed in an air crash.
