Hoping for shelter, the fugitive Demeter sneaks into Hecate's home. She explains that for three generations, godly beings have exploited the power of fertility goddesses in order to overthrow their fathers and seize power. She is afraid that Persephone, if recognized as a fertility goddess, will suffer the same fate. Hecate opines that neither of Zeus's sons would want to supplant him. But they overlook Apollo.
