When Long Bow and his friend Foxfoot are swept downriver during a buffalo hunt, they wash ashore on an island where a group of white orphans holds them captive—survivors of a wagon train attack orchestrated by ruthless white scouts. When a Seneca chief and his war party arrive to broker an alliance during the French and English conflict, a young white slave named Walter seizes a desperate chance to save his lame sister Mary from the coming bloodshed. When Flathead raiders attack the defenseless Blackfoot village during the sacred Sun Dance ceremony, young Long Bow and his friend Foxfoot race to intercept them and signal the distant warriors. Using ingenuity and courage—including a clever sun mirror to flash messages across the canyons—the two boys help turn the tide against the invaders and earn their place among the tribe's brave men.
