“Indian Tonic”

The second volume of this charming Franco-Belgian Western series, "Indian Tonic," brings a wonderfully offbeat encounter to life — a tall, wide-brimmed cowboy and a small Native American child face each other across a crackling campfire deep inside a cave, the warm amber glow doing little to ease the quiet tension between them. Jérôme Jouvray's cover artwork strikes a lovely balance between humor and atmosphere, with the tiny headdress-wearing figure sprinkling something into the flames while the stoic gunslinger looks on. Written by Olivier Jouvray and colored by Anne-Claire Jouvray, Lincoln #2 from 2008 promises the kind of deadpan, character-driven Western storytelling that makes this series such a pleasure.
