The second chapter of Les Sentinelles plunges readers into the chaos of September 1914 with a striking cover by Enrique Breccia: a lone French soldier stands in the foreground, his face obscured by a grotesque gas mask, rifle in hand, while shadowy troops advance through a blood-red, smoke-filled battlefield behind him. Breccia's painted artwork gives the scene a haunting, almost expressionistic weight that perfectly suits the horrors of the Marne.
