De Wachters #2
The second volume of De Wachters arrives in 2010 with a cover by Enrique Breccia that immediately commands attention: a solitary, masked soldier in a weathered grey coat cradles a rifle while distant figures move through a haze of war behind him — the Battle of the Marne, September 1914, rendered in muted, brooding tones. Breccia's painted linework gives the figure an almost supernatural weight, equal parts exhausted and ominous, the goggled mask stripping away any easy humanity. Xavier Dorison and Frits van der Heide's series continues to blend the Great War's mud and chaos with something darker lurking just beneath the surface.
