Le Journal de Spirou #44/1939
In "Marc Hercule Moderne [Superman]," a submarine captain confronts the Man of Steel with a gun, only to be overpowered and choked—until he triggers the sub’s self-destruct, blowing it apart. The explosion is seen from the Milan, where the crew watches in shock, and Princess Tania is horrified by the apparent death of their savior. Superman, stunned by the blast, is thrown into the air and sinks into the depths, losing consciousness. Written by Jerry Siegel and illustrated by Joe Shuster, with inks by Dennis Neville, this early story captures the hero’s vulnerability in a moment of high stakes. The cover, a striking collaboration by Rob-Vel and Davine, depicts the dramatic climax in bold, dynamic lines.
