Greg Pak publicly pitched the series concept as imagining a chunk of 1980s Earth transplanted onto a fantastical alien planet and cursed so that every rule broken transforms the offender incrementally into a monster — a premise he developed partly out of personal experience with anxiety and the semi-conscious belief, common among Asian American children of that era, that perfect rule-following guaranteed safety. Pak and artist Diego Galindo — who had both previously worked at BOOM! Studios on separate projects — connected in person at New York Comic Con and aligned on the collaboration before the series was announced in March 2024. Colorist Irma Kniivila, who had previously worked with Pak on Ronin Island and on the Who Belongs? educational comic for the NYC Department of Education, brought a watercolor-influenced palette to the book that Pak described as tactile and handmade. The eight-issue miniseries launched June 12, 2024, with issue #2 following on July 17, 2024, and concluded with issue #8 in March 2025; a trade paperback collecting the first four issues was published by BOOM! Studios in February 2025.
