L.E.G.I.O.N. '90 #14

The cover of L.E.G.I.O.N. '90 #14 — penciled by Kevin Maguire and inked by Al Gordon — is an unsettling, intimate portrait: a green-skinned, yellow-eyed figure with a lightning-bolt device on his forehead cradles a blue-skinned infant, smiling with quiet menace as he murmurs "Come to Daddy…!" The image balances something almost tender against something deeply threatening, and Maguire's expressive linework makes that tension impossible to shake. With Alan Grant and Barry Kitson on the interior story "The Sound of Silence," this 1990 DC series was clearly unafraid to go to uncomfortable places.
