Bill Woggon (1911–2003) created Katy Keene in 1945, debuting her in Wilbur Comics #5, and the character graduated to her own Archie title in 1949. By issue #28, Woggon was the sole writer, penciler, and inker of the book — a one-creator operation sustained in large part by the fan-submission pipeline he had cultivated, with readers sending in fashion sketches that he redrew and published under the contributors' names. The title's success had already led Woggon and his family to relocate from New York to California in 1948, and the California setting informed the Hollywood milieu of stories featuring characters like casting agent Danny O'Connell and fictional movie star Errol Swoon.
