About this Issue

This one-shot marks the first appearance of Kahhori — the MCU's first entirely original superhero, a Mohawk woman who holds no prior basis in Marvel Comics — within the pages of Marvel's print universe, formally bridging an animated, community-consultated creation into the 616 continuity. Published as part of Marvel's Voices to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, it represents a rare occasion where a character conceived specifically for television crossed over into comics rather than the reverse, and where the creative team was assembled to include Indigenous voices at the writing level from the start. The issue also introduces the Earth-TRN1091 versions of Loki and Eitri in their first comics appearances, giving the alternate timeline its first dedicated print footprint. As a Mohawk-centered story written and drawn in part by Indigenous creators, it extends a commitment to authentic representation that began with the animated episode's deep Mohawk-Nation consultation process.

History

Kahhori was created by writer Ryan Little in close collaboration with Mohawk Nation consultants — including historian Doug George-Kanentiio and language expert Cecelia King — for Season 2, Episode 6 of Marvel Studios' Disney+ animated anthology What If...? (2023), where she was voiced by Devery Jacobs and became the MCU's first protagonist with no comic-book antecedent. The concept was first pitched internally in April 2020, informed by the history of the Akwesasne region and delivered almost entirely in the Mohawk language with full subtitles. When it came time to bring Kahhori to print, Little returned as the frame-story writer alongside Indigenous writers Arihhonni 'Honni' David and Kelly Lynne D'Angelo — both making their Marvel Comics debuts — with art by Todd Harris, David Cutler, and Jim Terry, under editor Sarah Brunstad and editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski; the three-story anthology structure reflects the same commitment to multiple Indigenous voices that shaped the original animated episode.
