“Demon Madness”

In "Demon Madness," the Justice Machine faces a crisis from within as Demon struggles with the psychological fallout of "Edge" withdrawal, his grip on reality slipping as paranoia takes hold. Written by Tony Isabella and illustrated by Mike Gustovich, this pivotal 1987 issue explores the unraveling of a hero haunted by his own mind—his teammates caught in the crossfire of his fractured perception. The cover, also by Gustovich, captures the intensity of the moment, while the story ends with a tragic, solitary decision that echoes beyond the final page.

As Demon goes into “Edge” withdrawal, his ideas of reality and fantasy become blurred. He attacks his teammates, trying to stop an imaginary hatred he thinks they feel for him. As the fight ends, the “Edge” variant in his system burns itself out. Wanting to make up for his past mistakes, he decides to swim to New York City, about 2000 miles away from New Atlantis-- and drowns.
