“The Private War of Johnny Dune!”

In "The Private War of Johnny Dune!", Dr. McNider, once a respected physician blinded by a mobster's bomb, retreats into writing crime exposés—until a mysterious owl crash-lands through his window, triggering a startling new ability: night vision. With the help of self-made infra-red goggles, he reclaims his purpose, taking up the mantle of Dr. Mid-Nite to hunt down the elusive criminal known as "Killer." Written by Charles Reizenstein and illustrated by Stan Asch, with a striking cover by Neal Adams and Murphy Anderson, this 1971 tale blends psychological depth with superhero ingenuity.

Blinded by a mobster's bomb, Dr. McNider gives up the practice of medicine to write articles for crime magazines. But a chance accident, with an owl crashing through the former doctor's window during the night, allows McNider to discover that he can see in the dark (as well as in the daylight with special infra-red goggles he creates), so he decides to adopt the secret identity of Dr. Mid-Nite to round up "Killer" and bring him to justice for his crimes.
