Justice League Dark #40

A solitary figure in a long trenchcoat stands with his back to us, surveying a battlefield of fallen heroes and creatures — the tagline "Last Man Standing!" says everything about the grim weight of this image. The cover by Guillem March is a quietly devastating composition, its eerie green palette making the scattered bodies feel both otherworldly and deeply personal. Issue #40 closes out "The Amber of the Moment" arc under J. M. DeMatteis, and this penultimate visual alone makes clear that the New 52's strangest team has been pushed to its absolute limit.
