“Friendly Persuasion”

This 1980 installment of Jughead delivers the strip's signature domestic comedy right on the cover, laid out in two panels that tell a miniature story before you even open the book. In the top scene, Jughead cheerfully asks his newspaper-reading dad for an allowance increase while Archie and a blonde friend look on, only for Dad to diplomatically defer until Monday — and in the bottom panel, a wide-eyed Jughead spins the bad news with the punchline "I don't want to ruin your weekend!" Samm Schwartz both drew, inked, and lettered the cover, giving the whole thing that warm, loose charm he brought so reliably to Riverdale's most food-obsessed resident.
