“The Drummer Boy”

The "Come As the Opposite of What You Are" party premise on Dan DeCarlo's cover is pure Riverdale gold — Veronica in a devil costume, Archie dressed as an angel, and a graduation-robed figure mingling with party guests who are all wondering where Jughead has gotten to. The gag pays off in the bottom panel when Jughead himself arrives in little more than a dunce cap and a diaper, cheerfully asking "Somebody mention my name?" This 1969 Archie Series issue captures everything that made Jughead's solo title such a delight: a simple comedic setup with a perfectly timed punchline delivered in bright, energetic DeCarlo linework.
