“The Man Who Wouldn't Talk!”

Atlas Comics' Journey into Unknown Worlds #29 (July 1954) delivers the kind of wide-eyed terror that made pre-Code horror anthologies so irresistible. The cover — penciled and inked by Carl Burgos and Sol Brodsky — depicts a wild-eyed, screaming man in a torn shirt and bandana recoiling in sheer panic, cobwebs and eerie blue shadows pressing in around him as something large and dark looms at his back. Teased by the story title "In the Closet!" right on the cover, this issue promises the creeping dread of something lurking just out of sight — exactly the unsettling mood Atlas fans were lining up for at the newsstand.
