The issue also delivers a pivotal myth-building moment: a teenage Thor, rushing to rescue Sif from Storm Giants, instinctively lifts Mjolnir for the first time, unwittingly fulfilling the Fates' prophecy that he must first face death to earn the hammer. Hela — who would go on to become one of Thor's most enduring and dramatically complex adversaries — is introduced here in a surprisingly sympathetic light, releasing both Thor and Sif out of admiration for Thor's self-sacrifice. The issue was published with a cover date of March 1964 (on-sale January 3, 1964), during the peak of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's collaborative reimagining of Norse mythology for the American superhero comics audience. The main lead story — 'Slave of Zarrko, the Tomorrow Man!' — was penciled by Kirby and inked by Chic Stone, while the 'Tales of Asgard' backup, 'Death Comes to Thor!', was penciled by Kirby and inked by Paul Reinman, with lettering by Artie Simek; Stan Lee edited the entire issue. The 'Tales of Asgard' feature had launched just five issues earlier in #97, giving Lee and Kirby a dedicated sandbox to build out the mythological infrastructure of Asgard away from the contemporary-superhero demands of the main Thor story. The result was a backup strip that functioned almost like a separate mythology-building comic within the anthology format — and issue #102's installment proved to be its most consequential chapter.
