John Constantine -- Hellblazer Special: Papa Midnite #5
The fifth and final chapter of this Hellblazer special brings Papa Midnite's story to a close with a striking Ronald Wimberly cover: the powerful figure of Papa Midnite is shown from below, arms raised and bound, a ritual charm at his chest, while an enormous, supernatural face with glowing eyes looms behind him amid swirling flames — a banner bearing the Latin motto Oderint Dum Metuant ("Let them hate, so long as they fear") stretched across the image. Mat Johnson's script is brought to life by Tony Akins and Dan Green's interior art, rounding out a Vertigo miniseries that gave this morally complex occultist his own compelling spotlight. A satisfying conclusion to one of 2005's more distinctive corners of the Hellblazer universe.
