About this Issue

Jim Henson's Labyrinth #2 (October 2024) is the second chapter of the first-ever graphic adaptation of A.C.H. Smith's official novelization of Jim Henson's beloved 1986 fantasy film — a source text that was itself written concurrently with the film's production and therefore contains scenes and story beats that were never captured in the final cut. By moving the serialized adaptation into the deep fantasy corridors of the Labyrinth proper, issue #2 is where the creative team can finally lean into the surreal visual language that defines the property, making it the issue in which the series begins to realize its full artistic potential as a comic medium. Arriving as part of BOOM! Studios' Archaia imprint's anniversary publishing campaign ahead of the film's 40th anniversary in 2026, this run as a whole — and issue #2 as its first fully 'inside the Labyrinth' chapter — marks a significant milestone for Jim Henson's multimedia legacy.

History

The series was conceived as a partnership between BOOM! Studios and The Jim Henson Company and published under BOOM!'s award-winning Archaia imprint. Writer Kyla Vanderklugt, a Canadian comics writer and illustrator with prior credits on Jim Henson properties, adapted Smith's novelization — which was based on Terry Jones' screenplay and the original story by Jim Henson and Dennis Lee — while Italian artist Giorgio Spalletta, who co-created Alice Ever After and Alice Never After for BOOM! Studios and trained at the International School of Comics in Rome, provided the interior art; Sara Cuomo assisted with colors and Jim Campbell lettered throughout the run. The project was planned as an 8-issue monthly series launching in September 2024, designed to be subsequently collected into a graphic novel.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published October 23, 2024 by BOOM! Studios under its Archaia imprint, as issue #2 of an 8-part limited series.
  • Written by Kyla Vanderklugt with art by Giorgio Spalletta, colors by Sara Cuomo, and letters by Jim Campbell.
  • The series is the first-ever graphic adaptation of A.C.H. Smith's 1986 novelization of Jim Henson's Labyrinth — the novelization was written concurrently with the film's production and includes scenes and moments that were never filmed or captured in the final feature.
  • Issue #2's narrative centers on Sarah's journey deeper into the Labyrinth as the clock presses toward the 13-hour deadline, incorporating the 'helping hands' sequence and encounters with companions who have undisclosed ties to Jareth the Goblin King.
  • A review noted that the issue elides the film's 'Magic Dance' sequence to a single panel — a storytelling choice that reflects the challenges of translating a music-driven set piece into a silent sequential art format.
  • Issue #2 carries four cover editions: Cover A (main) by Nimit Malavia, Cover B by Elizabeth Torque, a 1:10 retailer incentive virgin variant by Nimit Malavia (Cover C), and a 1:25 retailer incentive virgin variant by Justine Florentino (Cover D).
  • The 2024 series exists alongside a separate, contemporaneous BOOM! Studios publication: Jim Henson's Labyrinth: Archive Edition, a 3-issue facsimile reprint of the original 1986 Marvel Comics adaptation illustrated by John Buscema — two distinct Labyrinth comic projects running in parallel the same year.
  • Artist Giorgio Spalletta is based in the Roman countryside and teaches at the International School of Comics in Rome, the same institution where he trained; his visual approach on the series has been described by reviewers as Disney-esque in its warmth and otherworldly environmental detail.
