“The Artist's Search”

In "The Artist's Search," Will Eisner delivers a quiet yet potent tale of courage and wit, centered on Mersh, a young man confronted by a trio of anti-Semitic youths who force him into a dangerous game of chance with two folded papers—one marked "Guilty," the other blank. With the stakes high and the tension palpable, Mersh’s quick thinking and inner strength become his greatest tools in a moment that tests more than just his nerve. A powerful story from a master of the medium, illustrated, inked, and lettered by Eisner himself, this issue stands as a moving testament to resilience and moral clarity.

A trio of anti-Semitic youths pretend to offer Mersh a challenge. Using two folded-up pieces of paper marked "Guilty", they let Mersh choose one of them, telling him that one piece of paper is blank. They warn Mersh that if he picks the one that says "Guilty", the thugs will bash him. However, Mersh manages to outsmart them.
