“Kelvin Flats, Police Constable 133”

Paul Grist's creator-owned celebration of British superheroics delivers a cover that's hard to miss: Jack Staff — suit blazoned with the Union Jack — dodges and weaves under the massive frame of TomTom the Robot Man, Castletown's cast-iron champion, whose red-eyed glare and enormous fists loom over the rubble-strewn scene. It's a wonderfully kinetic image, with Jack caught mid-acrobatic scramble as TomTom towers above him in a pose that promises serious mechanical muscle. Issue #16 of this Image series is a fine showcase for Grist's distinctive, energetic linework and his knack for channeling the charm of classic British comics into something fresh and thoroughly entertaining.
