Irredeemable #1
This collection kicks off Mark Waid's acclaimed superhero deconstruction series, following the world's greatest hero, the Plutonian, as he suddenly turns into its most terrifying villain. Volume 1 gathers the first four issues of the 2009 Boom! Studios series, exploring the immediate aftermath of his rampage and the desperate efforts of his former allies to stop him.
"Chapter 1" of Irredeemable introduces a devastating moment that reshapes the superhero landscape: the sudden, brutal murder of The Hornet and his family by the enigmatic Plutonian. Written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Peter Krause, with colors by Andrew Dalhouse and letters by Ed Dukeshire, the story unfolds through a tense flashback to the fateful meeting between Tony and Samsara, now remembered as the Paradigm scrambles to understand the fallen hero’s descent. The cover, a striking piece by John Cassaday, captures the weight of the moment, setting the tone for a series that examines the cost of power and the fragility of heroism.
In the wake of a devastating attack, the memory of a fateful meeting between Tony and Samsara surfaces as the remnants of The Paradigm search for answers. With the Plutonian’s rampage escalating, the heroes split up to uncover clues about his past—only to face him again, eerily calm as they narrowly escape.
In "Chapter 2" of *Irredeemable*, Kaidan arrives in Sky City to meet Alana Patel, the Plutonian’s former girlfriend, as she grapples with her own powers and the weight of a past encounter with the cosmic hero. Patel’s memories drift to the one being who unnerved the Plutonian—Modeus—and to the secret identity Dan Hartigan, a life the hero once lived and seemingly left behind.
In "Chapter 3" of *Irredeemable*, the Plutonian’s presence casts a shadow over an abandoned prison outside Philadelphia, where Scylla and Charybdis arrive under the watchful eye of Qubit. Beneath the crumbling structure, a group of supervillains casually explore the ruins of the late superhero Inferno’s lair—only to be met with an unexpected and chilling confrontation.
In "Chapter 4" of *Irredeemable*, Qubit’s past with the Plutonian surfaces as the newly rogue Superman arrives in Singapore, demanding a choice from the scientist that will test the true purpose of his Modeus robots. The weight of loyalty and consequence hangs in the air as the two face off, and the full scope of Qubit’s creations is finally revealed.
