About this Collection

This collection kicks off Mark Waid's acclaimed superhero deconstruction series, following the world's greatest hero, the Plutonian, as he suddenly turns into its most terrifying villain. Volume 1 gathers the first four issues of the 2009 Boom! Studios series, exploring the immediate aftermath of his rampage and the desperate efforts of his former allies to stop him.

"Chapter 1" of Irredeemable introduces a devastating moment that reshapes the superhero landscape: the sudden, brutal murder of The Hornet and his family by the enigmatic Plutonian. Written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Peter Krause, with colors by Andrew Dalhouse and letters by Ed Dukeshire, the story unfolds through a tense flashback to the fateful meeting between Tony and Samsara, now remembered as the Paradigm scrambles to understand the fallen hero’s descent. The cover, a striking piece by John Cassaday, captures the weight of the moment, setting the tone for a series that examines the cost of power and the fragility of heroism.

A masked man called The Hornet is vaporized along with his wife and children by The Plutonian. One week later the happy meeting of "Tony" and Samsara, who would become crimefighting partners, is recalled when the members of The Paradigm desperately try to glean information that would let them stop their former teammate's rampage. As the heroes resolve to split up and track down leads on Plutonian's private life, he arrives, strangely satisfied when they escape.
