About this Issue

Iron Man #169 is the pivot point of one of Marvel's most sustained character studies: Tony Stark's addiction is so complete that he physically cannot perform his duties as Iron Man, forcing trusted ally James Rhodes to don the armor for the first time. That act — a Black man taking on the mantle of one of Marvel's flagship heroes for what would stretch into nearly two years of monthly stories — was nearly without precedent in mainstream superhero comics at the time, and writer Denny O'Neil himself drew an explicit parallel to his earlier creation of DC's John Stewart as a Black Green Lantern. The issue also marks the payoff of Obadiah Stane's slow, methodical campaign to destroy Stark personally before taking his company, making it the narrative centerpiece of O'Neil's entire run. The cliffhanger ending — Rhodey suited up to face Magma while Tony lies unconscious — launched a story arc that would run through Iron Man #200 and remains the defining template for the 'legacy hero' structure that comics would revisit repeatedly in subsequent decades.

In "Blackout!", Tony Stark's struggles with alcoholism leave him incapacitated just as Magma returns for revenge, forcing a desperate Rhodey to step into the Iron Man armor for the first time. Written by Denny O'Neil and illustrated by Luke McDonnell, with inks by Steve Mitchell and colors by Bob Sharen, this pivotal 1983 issue sees Stark's public identity revealed in a moment of crisis, all under a cover by McDonnell and Mitchell.

History

Denny O'Neil, a recovering alcoholic himself, took over writing Iron Man with the explicit goal of portraying addiction with a rigor and duration that he felt the celebrated 'Demon in a Bottle' storyline (Michelinie/Layton, 1979) had not achieved — that earlier arc had resolved Stark's alcoholism in a single issue. O'Neil partnered with penciler Luke McDonnell and inker Steve Mitchell, whose grounded, metallic rendering of the armor suited the book's increasingly grim tone; the editorial team of Mark Gruenwald (editor) and Jim Shooter (editor-in-chief) oversaw the issue, with Mike Carlin as assistant editor. The issue went on sale January 18, 1983, with an April 1983 cover date, and is the first part of the two-part 'Blackout!' story.

Trivia · 7 facts

  • First appearance of James Rhodes in the Iron Man armor — this issue ends with Rhodey donning the suit for the first time, with his active debut as Iron Man continuing in issue #170.
  • Written by Denny O'Neil, penciled by Luke McDonnell, inked by Steve Mitchell, colored by Bob Sharen, and lettered by Rick Parker; edited by Mark Gruenwald under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter.
  • The story directly continues O'Neil's extended alcoholism arc, in which Obadiah Stane — the series' principal villain — manipulated Stark into relapse by engineering a romantic betrayal (Indries Moomji) and systematic corporate sabotage.
  • Tony Stark reveals his secret identity to Rhodes in this issue — Rhodes, notably unsurprised, tries to address his friend's drinking, but Stark refuses to engage with the problem.
  • Villain Magma (Jonathan Darque) returns from a prior Marvel Team-Up appearance (#110) to attack Stark International; because Tony is too intoxicated to fight effectively, the assault directly forces Rhodey's hand.
  • Cameo appearances include Daredevil (Matt Murdock), Obadiah Stane, Bambi Arbogast, Morley Erwin, Vic Martinelli, Indries Moomji, and a flashback cameo by Spider-Man.
  • The issue has been reprinted in: L'Invincible Iron Man (Editions Héritage) #123/124 (French reprint); Iron Man Epic Collection Vol. 10: The Enemy Within (2013); and Marvel Masterworks: The Invincible Iron Man Vol. 16 (2022). Exists in Direct Edition, Newsstand, Canadian, and Mark Jewelers insert variants.
