Iron Man #1
Iron Man (2008, Panini España) #1 represents the opening chapter of the first dedicated ongoing Iron Man monthly series to appear in Spain under Panini Comics, launching a post-Civil War era of storytelling for Spanish readers at the exact moment Iron Man was ascending to mainstream cultural prominence ahead of the 2008 MCU film. The issue brought to Spanish audiences the pivotal narrative turn in which Tony Stark assumes the directorship of S.H.I.E.L.D. and champions the Fifty-State Initiative — the political and moral crucible that would define his character arc through Secret Invasion and beyond. By anchoring its launch to Daniel and Charles Knauf's espionage-inflected, morally complex scripts and Roberto De La Torre's gritty artwork, the debut issue signalled an editorial ambition to deliver Iron Man not as a simple superhero title but as a grounded political thriller in the tradition of Warren Ellis's Extremis. The 36-issue run that followed made this series one of Panini España's most sustained Marvel commitments of the late 2000s.
In "Ninguno," Dum Dum Dugan confronts Secretary Kooning over his growing unease with Tony Stark’s corporate-style overhaul of SHIELD, questioning whether the agency’s mission is being compromised. Kooning stands by Tony’s leadership while firmly rejecting Dugan’s resignation, leaving the tension between duty and principle unresolved.
In "Ninguno," Tony Stark balances his role as SHIELD’s director with a grim autopsy on a cybernetic ecoterrorist responsible for Team Alpha’s demise, while across the world, Karim seeks out the reclusive Tem Borjigin in a Chinese psychiatric facility, offering him the ten rings of the Mandarin. As tensions rise and loyalty is tested, Tony faces a sobering reminder of duty from Dugan, and Tem’s quiet defiance hints at a deeper mystery beneath the surface.

Panini España launched this monthly series in February 2008, translating the US title Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. — itself a retitling of the ongoing Iron Man volume that began at issue #15 in the American numbering (February 2007) after the conclusion of Civil War. The first Spanish issue collects Civil War: The Initiative alongside early issues of the Knaufs' Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. run, translated by Eduardo Braun and distributed by Panini's Torroella de Montgri operation. The series carried multiple face-title subtitles across its run — beginning with 'Director de SHIELD. La Iniciativa' and later cycling through 'World War Hulk,' 'Máquina de Guerra: Arma de SHIELD,' and 'Stark: Desmantelado' — reflecting the shifting story arcs of the underlying US material it adapted.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Published by Panini Comics España in February 2008 (cover-dated II-2008), distributed from Torroella de Montgri, Girona.
- Subtitle on issue #1: 'Director de SHIELD. La Iniciativa' — adapting the US storyline in which Tony Stark takes command of S.H.I.E.L.D. following the events of Civil War and launches the Fifty-State Initiative.
- Translates US material written by the father-son team of Daniel Knauf and Charles Knauf, with pencils by Roberto De La Torre — a creative team known for grounding Iron Man in espionage politics and moral ambiguity.
- The original US issues adapted (Iron Man: Director of SHIELD #15 onward, plus Civil War: The Initiative) were published by Marvel Comics beginning February 2007; the Spanish edition followed roughly a year later.
- The series ran for 36 numbered issues through late 2010, one of Panini España's longest sustained Iron Man monthly runs, covering arcs that included World War Hulk tie-ins, the War Machine: Weapon of S.H.I.E.L.D. stories, 'Most Wanted,' and 'Stark Disassembled.'
- The face title changed multiple times across the run — from 'Director de SHIELD' to 'Máquina de Guerra: Arma de SHIELD' and finally 'El Invencible Iron Man. Stark: Desmantelado' — mirroring the shifting US creative teams and event crossovers.
- The underlying US run was notably overshadowed on the American market by the launch of Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca's Invincible Iron Man (2008), which debuted to coincide with the MCU film; however, the Panini España series continued publishing the Knauf material in parallel.
- Panini España subsequently issued the core Knauf material in a Marvel Deluxe collected format (2012) and an Omnibus (2021), attesting to the editorial team's view of the run as a durable part of the Iron Man canon for Spanish readers.
