The series was commissioned as part of Marvel's 2015 All-New, All-Different initiative, launched in the wake of the line-wide Secret Wars event, and represented Brian Michael Bendis's first sustained run on an Iron Man title. Bendis and artist David Marquez had previously collaborated on Ultimate Comics Spider-Man and All-New X-Men, and Marvel editor Tom Brevoort paired them here for what was positioned as a prestige relaunch. Marquez, who had broken in with the graphic novel Syndrome (2010) before earning a Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award nomination, brought a photo-realistic figure style that leaned into the MCU's visual vernacular — the issue even includes an Easter egg panel where Tony's civilian outfit echoes Robert Downey Jr.'s attire from San Diego Comic-Con 2012.
