"Lone Wolf of the Hurons" depicts a cavalry colonel's encounter with a lone Indian rider who approaches a fort to negotiate, only to reveal himself as part of a coordinated attack; the colonel and his troops ultimately repel the assault and trap the attackers. "Long Bow," by Capt. Stuart Kerrigan, recounts an old medicine man's narrative about a giant totem that once stood on a mountain, before being destroyed by fire brought by youthful riders; Long Bow gathers his people to learn the legend of the Dawned—a prophecy from when their fathers were children.
A young Shoshone warrior earns the name Washakie—"the Rattler"—through his skill and courage, but his true test comes when he must choose between the traditions of his people and a path of peaceful alliance with the white men moving through Wyoming. As railroads and settlers transform the frontier, Washakie's commitment to friendship and negotiation faces fierce resistance from his own tribesmen, forcing him to prove that wisdom and loyalty can be as powerful as any war cry. This story follows a real leader's struggle to guide his nation through an era of impossible change.
