“Heart Interest”

In "Heart Interest," a poignant tale from EC's Impact #5 (1955), a doctor's grim prognosis sets off a quiet, emotional unraveling between a grieving wife and her ailing husband. Written by Al Feldstein and illustrated by George Evans, with colors by Marie Severin and letters by Jim Wroten, the story unfolds with restrained tension as secrets and shifting perceptions strain a marriage. Jack Davis's haunting cover captures the mood perfectly, drawing readers into a narrative where love and loss are measured not in time, but in heartbeats.

The doctor, now attending Walter Harmon's funeral, reflects back when he predicted to Harmon's wife that her new husband had but six months to live. She decides not to tell her husband of the prognosis, but to just spend lots of quiet time with him, which begins to disturb Walter, and he starts to see another woman, leaving Laura. In the end, it is not Walter who passes away, but Laura......from a bad heart.
