“Das Monster und die Maschine!”

In "Das Monster und die Maschine!", Stan Lee and Jack Kirby deliver a pivotal moment in the Hulk’s saga as Rick harnesses Banner’s gamma technology to finally return the Hulk to Bruce Banner—only for Bruce to risk everything by reversing the process, fusing his mind with the Hulk’s body. With Dick Ayers’ dynamic inks and Stan Goldberg’s vibrant colors, this 1974 issue marks a breakthrough in control, setting the stage for a new kind of duality. The cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers captures the tension perfectly, a striking visual of man and monster at the crossroads.

Rick uses some of Banner's machinery to transform the Hulk, who was stuck in his monster persona, back into Bruce. Bruce is incredibly weakened by the transformation and takes a chance in using the machinery on himself again which transforms him back into the Hulk's body but with Bruce Banner's mind. Now Bruce and the Hulk can switch at will using the gamma ray machine.
