“The Failure of Hydropolis”

The cover of this August 1980 Marvel magazine issue says it all: the Hulk strains with every ounce of his considerable strength to pry apart the massive mechanical jaws of a monstrous robotic shark-like creature, while a silvery armored figure is caught in the churning ocean fray alongside him. Bob Larkin's painted cover work captures the sheer scale and fury of the encounter beautifully, with crashing waves and a stormy sky lending the whole scene a real sense of oceanic dread. Inside, Doug Moench, Ron Wilson, and Alfredo Alcala bring "The Failure of Hydropolis" to life — and if this cover is any indication, the Jade Giant is in for one spectacular battle.
