Steve Gerber and Phil Winslade's MAX Comics take on Howard gets gloriously strange in issue #5, "Gone to Ohio." Glenn Fabry's cover tells you everything you need to know about the tone: Howard himself crouches in the foreground, wide-eyed and reaching outward, while behind him a massive horned demon looms amid crackling lightning, suspending a woman with her arms outstretched — all surrounded by skeleton onlookers seated in the shadows. It's unsettling, darkly funny, and entirely in keeping with the kind of absurdist existential dread that makes this 2002 MAX series such a rewarding read.
