In "Der Unmenschliche," a disillusioned Hollywood special effects man constructs an android to punish a woman who rejected him—claiming she was "waiting" for someone else. When the robot arrives at the museum where she works, he relaxes, only to be stunned when she appears at the door, leading the machine. She reveals she, too, is a robot—and that she’s been "waiting" for a machine to love. As the two approach him, he retreats toward an open window, falling through as the story closes.
