Written and illustrated by Judd Winick, the story deepens the mystery of Hilo's origins while delivering action-packed, humorous, and heartfelt moments for middle-grade readers.
In "Chapter 1 A Little Weird," Hilo grapples with the weight of his emotions—something rare for a robot—while confronting the growing chaos of portals opening across town. Written and illustrated by Judd Winick, with colors by Guy Major, this issue deepens Hilo’s bond with D.J. and reveals the quiet fears beneath his courage, all while the team scrambles to contain the rising threat. The cover by Judd Winick captures the story’s offbeat tone, a 13.99 USD comic in 2016 that blends heart and humor in equal measure.

Hilo dreams of Dr. Horizon, which makes him remember that neither he nor Razorwark wants robots to be hurt. They are the only robots who feel emotions, but Razorwark wants to destroy humans, while Hilo protects them. Gina fears that the world will soon know of Hilo's nature, and also fears that he could be dangerous inadvertently... which D.J. refuses to believe. Hilo confesses to D.J. that he is often afraid, except that he knows D.J. will always come to help him. As more and more portals open around town the team spreads out, using Hilo's devices to send the monsters back.
