About this Issue

Hellverine #5 serves as the climactic turning point of the ongoing series' opening arc, depicting Akihiro's direct confrontation with Mephisto in Hell and his definitive psychological break from the demon lord's control — a moment that locks in his identity as an independent anti-hero rather than a puppet of Hell. The issue also delivers the cameo debut of Hell Hulk, a brand-new demonic creature created by Benjamin Percy and Raffaele Ienco, whose introduction seeds the next major story arc and adds a genuinely novel monster to Marvel's supernatural corner. As the fifth chapter of Hellverine's first ongoing series — itself the product of a mini-series that proved fan demand was strong enough to sustain a continuing title — the issue marks a creative milestone in Percy's multi-year effort to build a coherent supernatural mythology around Wolverine's family line.

History

The ongoing Hellverine series launched in December 2024, announced in August of that year after the four-issue 2024 mini-series sold well enough for Marvel to greenlight a continuing title, with Percy and Ienco retained as the creative team. Percy had been writing both Wolverine and Ghost Rider simultaneously when he co-created the Hellverine concept in the 2023 'Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance' crossover, and the character's rapid expansion — from crossover cameo to mini-series to ongoing — followed a trajectory Percy himself compared to Cosmic Ghost Rider's breakthrough. Issue #5 falls within the first collected volume of the ongoing, later reprinted as Hellverine Vol. 1: Lost Highways (August 2025).
