Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #3

The penultimate chapter of this four-part Dark Horse series frames Hellboy — massive, red, and grimly purposeful — within an ornate golden border, flanked by two weathered, white-bearded dwarves armed with axes and a pistol, all of it set against a dense tangle of dark, gnarled roots or vines that press in from every direction. Matt Smith's cover linework has a wonderfully rugged energy, and Chris O'Halloran's muted greens playing against Hellboy's vivid crimson give the whole image an eerie, mythic weight. With Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden steering the story, this series clearly has its roots deep in Norse legend — and the cover promises the tension is still very much building.
