Part three of the "Critical Mass" arc finds this October 1995 DC Vertigo issue in gripping form, with Sean Phillips's cover depicting a long-haired figure in a black tank top, arms thrown wide and mouth open in a raw, anguished cry, while a ring of gaunt, reaching figures — pale and desperate — claw at him from every direction. It's a visceral, painterly image that captures the series' signature atmosphere of supernatural dread pressing in from all sides. Paul Jenkins's writing paired with interior art from Pat McEown makes this a compelling chapter in one of Vertigo's most enduring horror titles.
