Hellblazer #93

Part two of the five-part "Critical Mass" arc finds John Constantine's world rendered in Sean Phillips's hauntingly atmospheric cover — a pale, blonde figure stands in the shadowy foreground amid a tangle of industrial pipes and machinery, while a vast, otherworldly green face looms in the sky above a dreamlike cityscape bathed in gold and violet light. The contrast between that heavy, grinding ironwork below and the almost mythic visage above gives the image a brooding sense of forces far larger than any one man pressing down on the scene. Paul Jenkins and Sean Phillips were deep into a compelling Hellblazer run by 1995, and this striking cover promises the kind of quietly unsettling storytelling the series did so well.
