Glenn Fabry's painted cover for this August 1994 DC Vertigo issue is quietly unsettling — a bloodied woman dominates the foreground in close profile while a tense, disheveled John Constantine looms in the shadowy background, clutching fabric as though bracing for something terrible. The contrast between her wounded stillness and his wary urgency sets a genuinely foreboding tone for "Rake At The Gates Of Hell Part Three," the penultimate chapter of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's arc. If this cover is any indication, things have gotten very dark for Constantine and those around him.
