“Last Man Standing, Part Two: No More Heroes”

Part two of "Last Man Standing" arrives in this March 1997 Vertigo entry, with a cover by Sean Phillips that's genuinely unsettling: a green-skinned, white-bearded figure with opaque blue goggles looms over a glowing, star-scattered object, while a familiar trench-coated figure and churning red chaos — bulls, bodies, and smoke — press in behind him. Paul Jenkins and Sean Phillips are steering John Constantine through a five-part story that clearly has no shortage of strange, occult menace. If the cover's eerie calm-before-the-storm atmosphere is any indication, "No More Heroes" is shaping up to be a compelling chapter in one of Vertigo's most atmospheric series.
