When Julie attempts to escape with a criminal contact and is pursued by armed enemies, Johnny transforms into the supernatural Hell-Rider to save her, battling a masked villain called the Claw who possesses superhuman strength. The origin story establishes Hell-Rider as the comic's primary hero, with his powers and purpose tied to protecting innocents and confronting the supernatural threats that plague the world.
