Steven remembers how he infiltrated the combine to prove his father's innocence, only to realize his father was the leader of the group. That trauma caused Steven to become Haywire and his consciousness to fracture. Later, Steven's girlfriend is gunned down and Haywire has to battle the White Lotus, agent of the former Japanese allies of the combine. White Lotus barely escapes with her life. Afterwards, Alex visits his therapist and comes to the shocking realization that the Steven Majorsky part of his psyche has "died".
