In the first, a redheaded boy and a man in blue encounter a ticking time bomb that belongs to Oliver Button, leading to comedic panic as they attempt to handle the dangerous device. In the second story, a woman in a green dress and red hair spends time with friends at a countryside inn, where they dine together and enjoy each other's company, but she must eventually leave—receiving a heartfelt note from a character named Slug expressing his affection for her.
When Hap decides to surprise his girlfriend Judy with a casual Saturday morning visit—inspired by a dating advice book—he discovers she's in the middle of her beauty routine, complete with mud facials, calisthenics, and marble-rolling exercises for her arches. What starts as an awkward encounter turns into Hap reluctantly helping Judy through her regimen, including an errand to a notoriously long nylon line downtown. As the day unfolds, both learn that "casual" doesn't mean what they thought it meant when it comes to looking presentable for each other.
When a mysterious bombing spree strikes the town, Hap gets caught in a case of mistaken identity after finding what appears to be a time bomb at the local soda joint—only to discover the explosive package belongs to a rival boy named Oliver. Racing against the clock to clear his name and expose the real culprit, Hap must convince the police that he's the detective, not the criminal, before the whole situation detonates in his face.
Hap Hazard thought he had just enough money for a boat ride with his dates, but a series of unexpected expenses—boat stops, meals at an inn, and a surprise rainstorm—quickly drain his pocketbook, leaving him desperately broke and scrambling to get everyone home. Meanwhile, the backup story follows Zippermouth as he tries to win back his girl Slug by adopting poetry and manners to compete with the new, cultured boy Oswald, only to discover that being true to himself might be the real key to her heart.
H. Hazard is desperately hunting down a newspaper reporter to win a twenty-five dollar prize in a local contest—all he has to do is tap the guy with a copy of the Gazette. What should be a simple scavenger hunt turns into a wild chase through the city when H. Hazard mistakes a prize fighter for his target, leading to a frantic escape and a series of mishaps. Just when H. Hazard thinks he's finally caught up with the real reporter and claimed his prize, a technicality threatens to ruin his plans—and his big date with Judy.
When a massive flood sweeps through town, Hap rows out to check on his friend Zip and Zip's uncle Ethelbert—but discovers that the determined old man has stuck stubbornly to his word about mowing the lawn, come what may. It's a lighthearted look at one eccentric uncle's unwavering commitment, even when floodwaters are rising around him.
