Gwenpool #4 is the penultimate chapter of the 2025 five-issue limited series and the narrative pivot on which the entire 'Dark Gwenpool Saga' turns: it delivers the full, in-story revelation of Gwen Stacy's true nature as X-31 — not a resurrection of the original but rather the reanimated soul of the Gwen Stacy clone from 'Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy,' placed in a new body by the shadowy Weapon X program and its handler the Great Architect. By forcing Gwen Stacy to confront her own cloned origin while Gwenpool (as a ghost) simultaneously possesses Spider-Man's body, the issue layers the franchise's long tradition of fourth-wall meta-commentary on top of one of Marvel's most emotionally weighted characters, generating a tonal collision that is genuinely novel in both characters' publishing histories. The 2025 Gwenpool series was announced by Marvel on February 18, 2025, and pitched explicitly around the 50th anniversary of the first Clone Saga, with writer Cavan Scott — best known for the Star Wars: The High Republic novels and comics — receiving an editorial directive that incorporated the resurrection of Gwen Stacy. Scott acknowledged that the directive gave him the conceptual 'nugget' he needed, and he re-read the entirety of the original Unbelievable Gwenpool run in preparation. The series also marked the Marvel Comics debut of artist Stefano Nesi, who was previously known for his work on DC's Batman line, making the book a dual debut for the creative team in the Marvel Universe.
