This 2017 Gwandanaland Comics collection reprints Charlton's Unusual Tales material, and the cover art by Charles Nicholas (pencils) and Vince Alascia (inks) sets an immediately unsettling tone — a terrified man in a suit staggers between gnarled trees as an ominous dark mass billows ominously in the background, teasing a story called "The Blotting Threat." The cover copy asks whether the blot is "a figment of Elmo's imagination or stark reality," which is exactly the kind of creepy, ambiguous hook that made mid-century anthology horror so compelling. If you're a fan of eerie, atmospheric short-story comics, this volume is a fine way to revisit that tradition.
