Issue five of Grrl Scouts: Magic Socks delivers the series' anarchic energy in full force, with Jim Mahfood's cover splashing pink spray-paint bursts across a pale yellow background as two punk women tangle with a grinning, gold-chain-wearing spray-can creature straight out of a fever dream. The figures — one in a patterned jacket, the other sporting a lightning-bolt mohawk and skull motif — radiate the scrappy, street-art-drenched attitude that makes this 2017 Image series such a distinctive read. Mahfood's linework crackles with graffiti-influenced spontaneity, making this penultimate chapter's cover genuinely hard to look away from.
