History

The broader Godzilla vs. Marvel event was the product of multi-year negotiations between Marvel and Toho International — talks that began, per editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, over reprinting the original 1977–1979 series and grew into a full creative collaboration timed to Godzilla's 70th anniversary. Mark Paniccia, who had edited the first wave of Godzilla Variant Covers for Marvel in 2024, served as series editor. For the Thor issue specifically, Jason Aaron — whose Thor run began in 2012 and shaped much of the character's modern mythology — was brought in as writer alongside Aaron Kuder, with whom Aaron had previously collaborated on Avengers Forever; Aaron stated he and Kuder deliberately chose the GMK incarnation of Godzilla because it is 'one of the most brutal and powerful versions of the King of the Monsters.' The issue was internally titled 'Ragnarok All-Out Attack,' a direct nod to the subtitle of the 2001 Toho film that inspired its Godzilla design.
